HOW TO BE A "WITCH" (WICCAN) AND ELEMENTARY WICCA MAGIC / MAGICKActivities - Anointing a CandleA candle should be anointed and dedicated before it is lit. Anointing a candle may seem complicated at first, but once you get the hang of it, it is quite simple and well worth it.Place some ‘anointing’ oil on the thumb and forefinger of your dominant hand. An herbal or essential oil is preferable, but sweet almond oil or even 1st cold pressed olive oil reserved just for ceremonies will do in a pinch. With the candle upside down, rub the oil around the rim of the base in a counter-clockwise circle (See Fig. 1). Next with the candle right side up, place your thumb and forefinger around the middle and turn the candle counterclockwise. While it is turning, spread the oil at an angle down to the base rim (See Fig. 2). Turn the candle over again and repeat this motion towards the top rim (See Fig. 3). Then rub oil once around the top rim counterclockwise (See Fig. 4). Finally rub your thumb and forefinger once up the wick (See Fig. 5). You have now created a spiral vortex of oil and energy around your candle (See Fig. 6). ![]() Arrows show the motion of the oil – not the way you turn the candle. The final step to anointing a candle is dedication. Rub your hands together to stimulate the magnetic energy in your body. Hold your candle with your right (positive polarity) hand over the top and your left (negative polarity) hand on the bottom. Recite your dedication three times out loud. Your dedication can be a prayer of thanks, an affirmation, a request for guidance, or a wish to support a dream. As a novice practitioner, you might dedicate your first candle with gratitude for your life and the opportunity to grow and learn new things. Now you may light your candle!
