HOW TO BE A "WITCH" (WICCAN) AND ELEMENTARY WICCA MAGIC / MAGICKActivities – Smudging or Cleansing With SmokeThis ritual, known as smudging, comes to us from Native American tradition and is very sacred to them. Specific plants and herbs (cedar and sage) are burned and the resulting smoke is used to clear away negative energies or drive away ‘bad spirits’.Smudging is considered to be a very powerful ceremony. It creates a vortex of energy which casts out negative vibrations and entices positive ones. While performing this ritual it is important to keep in mind this purpose of dispelling negative forces. After you have lit your herbs the first step is to rub your hands in the smoke to clean them, then gather more smoke with your hands and rub it over your body, especially in any area that needs special healing attention. Next, to clear a room the smoke is carried and ‘pushed’ into the edges and corners of your space. This is literally done by carrying the vessel you are burning your herbs in around with you and using a feather to fan or brush the smoke in the direction you desire. Some people will use a bundle of sage, because it is easier to carry around. Perform this clearing in a counterclockwise movement around the room or space three times. When all of the dark or uncomfortable spots have been filled with this smoke, it is time to entice the positive energy back into the room. This is done with sweet grass. The smoke is introduced into the same space and pushed into every corner of the room, but is done in a clockwise motion three times. This creates a vortex of positive energy and light. To cleanse or purify an object or tool hold it over the smoke of cedar and sage, turning it around all possible ways, to let the smoke completely encompass the object.
