Holy Days and Sabbaths to Observe - Beltane, Bealtaine, May Day - May 1

May Day falls on the exact opposite side of the wheel of the year from Halloween. These are the two greatest holy days for many people because they mark the beginning and end of the two major seasons, summer and winter.

On this day the Goddess and God join in sexual union. The God that is born at Yule is conceived. The Maypole appears as a phallic symbol, interwoven with ribbons, red for the male and white for the female. The process of weaving and dance are symbols of the masculine and feminine intertwining in fertility.

This holiday is a celebration of spring and eroticism. Perhaps you can think of a special way to celebrate this holiday!!! Festivities should include joyful music. Your altar can be decorated with ribbons, wreaths and flowers.

A large bonfire is traditional on May Day and it’s good luck to bring a coal home to your own hearth. Smoke from fires lit on Beltane is also used for purification.
