GETTING STARTED IN WICCA

Basic Wiccan Tools and Symbols - Fire: Candle

Size of candle does not matter as much as using one that is unscented or with naturally perfumed, not petrochemical. Many scented candles you see in stores may say 'natural' – but be sure they are talking about essential oil based scent.

At some point you may want to get a larger candle like the kind you see lit in churches for your altar. They are made with soft, clean-burning wax in clear, tall glass containers and are the safest candles to leave burning for long amounts of time. Most markets carry them in the International foods aisle. A small unscented votive candle will do as well. If you use a votive, keep a special holder just for your altar. And please make sure your candle sits on a stable and heat resistant surface!

Like many Wiccans, I keep a candle burning even when I’m not at home so I always have the spirit of fire in my house. But it’s in a well protected area. During the ‘94 Northridge Earthquake the candle simply fell over and extinguished itself. Legally, I must advise you to never leave a burning candle or incense unattended. You will have to make the decision whether it is safe to keep your candle continuously lit and live with the ramifications. This would not be wise to do if you have children, pets, or especially bad karma!

There are colored candles available, but as a new Solo Practitioner, start with white (I always burn white) and offer your intention as one of thanks or blessing when you anoint you candle. (See Rituals to Observe: Anointing a Candle) Give yourself time to align with the universe and understand Wicca before you go complicating things with color vibrations (See Other Metaphysical Tools: Color).
