Basic Wiccan Tools and Symbols - Chalice

In the Old Days the cup or chalice was also referred to as the ‘cauldron’. It is a receptacle which symbolizes the ‘womb of the Goddess’ - the vessel which holds water from which all life comes. Thus, it is one of the most powerful tools used by Wiccans. The earliest forms used in Goddess worship date back over 8000 years in India. The cauldron was defamed by the Church in the Middle Ages who did not appreciate its rich feminine symbolism and wanted to elevate their own patriarchal religion.

Traditionally it is often colored silver or clear to represent the element of water, winter, and the direction West. Use your ‘Steel Chalice’ to mix herbs, hold wine, water, or liquid during rituals.

Sometimes for specific ritual, there is a separate glass ‘water’ container water on an altar along with a Chalice.
