GETTING STARTED IN WICCA

Basic Wiccan Tools and Symbols - Other Metaphysical Tools and Symbols – The Witch's Broom

The exact or ‘perfect’ tool is never the final magical solution. In fact, as you learn more, your altar and tools may evolve. It is the spirit of your intention, your own mind, imagination, and visualization that makes an altar or a ritual ‘real’.

The Besom or witches broomstick is a symbolic tool constructed from two parts - the handle is a phallic symbol and the brush end is made from the broom herb (a feminine herb). This union of male and female symbolism was often used in fertility ceremonies.

The broom was also used to balance and ‘sweep’ negative influences away from a home. In rural communities, it was even symbolically brushed over fields to encourage a rich ‘fertile’ harvest.
