WHEEL OF THE YEAR - SPECIFIC WICCA WICCAN SABBATH HOLY DAY RITUALS

Lummas - History of Lummas

Leader (or someone) tells the story...
"Lummas is the first of the three harvest festivals. The altar is decorated with unripe fruits and grains. The first fruits of the season have been harvested, but there is still an abundance of crops in the field that are still growing but not quite ripe yet. There is still the possibility of threats to the completion of the growth cycle. So this festival is really about a space between hope and fear - it is a time of waiting.

"The festival is also known by the name Lughnasad after the sun God, Lugh. And the feeling of this ritual may be more respectful and solemn than others. It refers to sacrifices or compromises that must be made for a greater good.

"Projects undertaken may not be quite at the state of fruition yet and we need to stay the course and see them through to completion. The ritual is also about thanksgiving and courage and perseverance. Colors worn are orange and red. Corn and potatoes which tend to ripen earliest are eaten and displayed as proof that eventually the harvest - and reward for hard work will happen.
