Basic Wiccan Tools and Symbols – Air: Knife or Sword, Wand, Feather, Incense
Air can be symbolized by a wand or any tool that is waved through the air. Some Wiccans use a double edged knife with a black handle (called an athame). The knife or wand directs the flow of energy from the self to whatever you are doing. A ritual knife is also used for cutting up herbs.
Perfumed Oils
I have an open vial of perfumed oil to symbolize air in my altar. I also have incense which symbolizes air and fire (See Other Metaphysical Tools: Incense, Herbs, and Oils) and a feather with a crystal at its end that I use for special ceremonies.
Magic Wand
A wand cut from traditional White Willow is especially nice to have around. Floral shops usually have bunches of willow branches available for sale during certain seasons of the year. If you can find willow branches – find a nice stretch of a single branch that is not too knarled or twisted. It’s nice to have one end be a bit larger where you would hold the wand tapering to a slimmer end where you would point it. Use a pair of floral cutters or a very sharp knife to cut a stretch of wood approximately 6″ to 9″ long depending on what feels right to you. Make sure you have a clean fresh cut that you have made on each end. Also please make the cuts on a 45 degree diagonal angle. Numbers and ratios like this are important.
I list some of the scents and one of the brand of oils I have bought on this page:
