Wiccan Metaphysical Tools and Symbols – Planetary Guidance and Astrology

There are countless books on the subject of astrology that will help guide you on the relevance the planets have over the shifting energies on our planet. I recommend getting one if you are not already familiar with the signs of the zodiac and the different energy encompassed by each specific sign. Although Wiccan tradition does not rely on astrological forecasts on a daily basis, it does acknowledge that the position of the planets in the heavens are apart of the great natural system that we live in and they do affect us.

Hypocrites

The Greek doctor, Hypocrites advised “Do not touch with iron those parts of the body that are governed by the sign through which the moon is passing.”

In other words, each zodiac sign corresponds to specific body parts and the moon passes through each of them weekly. (You can gain this kind of information from a Celestial Guide.) Hypocrites felt strongly that these moon/zodiac/body correlations were something to be familiar with and to respect. By the way, the Hippocratic Oath which all licensed doctors must take is named after him.

Get a Celestial Guide

A Celestial Guide to the year is an excellent resource to have and will apprise you of any special movements that have especially strong influence. While it doesn’t have the in depth explanations of a Celestial Guide, the Old Farmers Almanac is available almost everywhere and will tell you most of what you need to know about the movements in the heavens.

Moon Cycle Calendar

Most calendars keep track of the moon’s cycles. The cycles of the moon are often equated with the ages of the Goddess: waxing-Virgin, full-Mother, and waning-Crone. In Celtic mythology, each of the thirteen moons in a year has a particular significance. If you are a woman, you should be especially aware of the moon and her ways. Ideally a woman’s cycle should mirror the ebb and flow of the moon: ovulating and at the height of fertility when the moon is full and menstruating with the dark, new moon.

Ritual Days

An Esbat is a Holy Day other than a Sabbath when Wiccan rituals are performed. They are held with Full Moons and sometimes with the New Moon as well as any other time a special observance is desired.
