Basic Wiccan Metaphysical Tools and Symbols –
Pentagram
The Pentagram and pentacle are the most misunderstood metaphysical symbols. They represents the four elements of the earth connected with the element of spirit at the top. They may also represent the five stages of life (birth, adolescence, adulthood, old age, and death), the five points of your body (your head, left and right hands, and left and right legs), or your five senses. A pentacle is simply the pentagram surrounded by a circle.
People who delve in ‘black magic’ often invert the pentagram (turn the star upside down) placing matter or ‘physical gain’ over spiritual endeavors. This is how the pentagram received a negative association.
By drawing a pentagram – you are simply visually depicting the concept of tying the power of the elements of the earth behind your intention (spirit). Think of it as a visual affirmation, much like when someone makes the sign of the cross – they are invoking the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
The pentagram can be used to invoke (encourage) a thought or wish, or to banish (discourage) a thought or wish depending if you start the star to the right or left (respectively).
