Metaphysical Wiccan Sacred Scents

Perhaps one of the more important aspects of Wiccan ritual is the use of scented elements in performing spells and magic. Incense represents both the Elements of Air and of Fire because you are using one element to empower another. As a pure anointing oil, it simply represents the element of Air.

Magic Through Your Nose!

Ever since mankind unlocked the key to fire it has been associated with magical properties. Now you can unlock this magic for yourself. According to tradition, incense itself symbolizes the element of ‘air’. It is used to dispel unwanted energy, entice positive forces, consecrate spaces, objects, or even people, for blessings, and used simply as an offering to deity.

Smudging

Long before compressed incense sticks and cones existed, native people from cultures all over the world burned pure plants for their symbolic energies. These plants were burned loose on an altar or thrown into the heart of a fire to release their fragrant and spiritually powerful smoke. Some Native American tribes bound the dried loose leaves of white sage with twine to form what are called ‘smudge sticks’ and burned them for purification prior to religious ceremonies.

Modern compressed sticks and cones can be more convenient for frequent usage or travel. But for special or more powerful rituals, it is preferable to use the authentic plant materials in their natural state to fully release the full potential of energy or ‘potency’ they contain.

Safety Precautions:

Please burn incense in an appropriate metal, ceramic or glass fireproof container. You may also want to use fireproof sand and/or a charcoal tablet as a clean base on which to burn it. Place away from flammable objects and out of the reach of children and pets. And remember, never leave incense burning unattended.
