Introduction to Ritual – Can I Write My Own Rituals?
I always had an avid interest in Witchcraft, but not until recently have I started to experiment. I have bought some books by Deborah Gray, and liked them very much. The most interesting part was the index at the back. I’ve bought a book and have started writing my own Spells and Rituals. I just want to know is that wrong? Or are there certain Herbs and/or Oils that should never be combined? Please reply quickly, because I’m quite anxious about this.
Luck and Protection,

Dear Tigereye,
Goddess Bless You for your concern! You must be a gentle and positive spirit with a high moral code to be troubled by this. I would not worry about combining oils or making up your own spells and rituals as long as you are doing it from a loving and peaceful place, which it sounds like you are.
So the answer to your question is YES!!! I actually like to encourage people to re-write or paraphrase the rituals they find in books. Sometimes the ritual text in books is so formal or a little too over the top in a pseudo-mystical mumbo jumbo kind of way. While there’s a lot to be said for formal ritual text, it’s important that you feel comfortable with what you are saying AND understand what you are saying. Sometimes writing your own spell or ritual is the only way to make that happen.
Now, the only thing I might question is that your only source of information about Wicca and spells is coming from a pop Wicca writer. Deborah Gray has written some fun books like Nice Girls Book on Naughty Spells and How to Turn Your Ex-Boyfriend into a Toad and Other Spells but these are not really the most formative foundation for casting and creating your own Wicca spells and rituals. Yes, Ms. Gray is right about teaching magic is in your head and heart, but I also believe that there are unexplained forces out there that it would be wise to be informed about. Learn about that energy by reading a few books by more respected authors such as Starhawk or Scott Cunningham. So keep up the good work and much luck and protection back to you!
Blessed Be.
